Message to All Sierra Leoneans- Home and Abroad
I have followed and listened to Sierra Leoneans home and abroad for months now. I deeply understand our frustration and concerns about our country. Especially going through the war and now fighting corruption with evidences showing that our country is poor because we have mismanaged it for so long. Luckily, a new call has bluntly said: ‘’enough is enough’’.
Amid all these hard times, we have a duty to keep our peace, support our government and build this nation without any allegiance to a political party. Our common factor must be Sierra Leone not SLPP or APC. It must be Mama Salone.
My dear Sierra Leoneans, home and abroad, please listen. While I am aware of the many challenges Mama Sierra Leone is faced with, I must remind us that for every great nation, there was a period of trials and temptations. Presently, I am sad because for each time one talked to a Sierra Leonean, there is an evidence of ‘’Ground Dry’’. I accept this fact and I must remind us that for the first time in history, we have a country that is run by leaders who are brave enough to tell us that we have difficult times ahead. This does not show any weakness, it enforces the fact that the new leadership understands the task and they will work on the right solutions. This will possibly extend to those being groomed to become tomorrow’s leaders readily prepared to work hard for a positive continuity of our change. Every Sierra Leonean will agree with me that this country deserves great leaders. At least even though things are tough, there is no rampant rumours of corruption yet. At least there is nothing like ‘’mungu don boss pan machis’’.
As a country, when good times are about to come, there will be scarcity. By accepting for all of us to working hard, we are sure for a change of our destiny to the true and meaningful future that our children will be proud of. We are committing for a true change. This acceptance of the reality and the admission of our leaders that hard times are ahead is a sure way of a durable solution. As citizens, providing the space for the government to think through as to give us durable solutions will yield us great successes. And for sure, this is the beginning of a great Sierra Leone.
In many instances, politicians become corrupt when there are quick and fast fixes to national problems. When any government decides to lie and fool its citizens with a quick fix, the final outcomes is nothing less than rampant corruption. But careful and durable solutions to national issues have their roots built in hard and tough beginnings.
I want to join us all to work together and change this country’s narrative. We can only achieve this if we realized that making Sierra Leone great is beyond our politics of who wins and who loose. It is about a people whose destiny has come to a new call. One that we are all proud of in just few years to come. When Ghana embarked in 1990 on the pathway to a new Ghana, things were even tougher than what Sierra Leone is seeing today. As I write this message, every Ghanaian is proud of Ghana today. Ghana has earned its respect in the community of nations; something we have the skills for, the talent, as well as the energy to achieve. What I can openly say is this, we cannot tolerate any government to use this as an opportunity to lie, steal and mislead the nation. But as long as the struggle of the government remains genuine and focus, let us all join hands to support. Let us all adjust our wants and focus on our needs and build a nation of proud sons and daughters. For a better Sierra Leone, we need efforts from everyone.
Diaspora Sierra Leoneans
For every Sierra Leonean abroad working or going to school, it is time we stand up and impact the country. Let us make use of our tribal differences like we are making use of our religious differences. I am a Christian, but attending a Muslim School in Kenema, I did not feel any discrimination and not a single day we ever had a misunderstanding because of religion. This is something every Sierra Leonean is proud of. We are the most religious tolerant nation on earth, and this is something we must replicate into our everyday life whether in politics or in business.
As such, if you are a Sierra Leonean working abroad, please prepare to build a home in your village, start a rice farm in your village and extend to your chiefdom headquarter, the district and then the capital. The cities are getting congested, one way to help is to decentralize our residencies and investments. If you are a doctor, start sharing your time between where you work and Sierra Leone. Work abroad for some months, come home and work for some months and by doing this, we can change the health system automatically bringing home our talents and skills. This is applicable for all fields and specializations. We should not come home only when we need political positions. Such is not just wrong but misleading and unhelpful to Sierra Leone.
Moreover, we have Universities in need of us all. Spare some time and come home to teach, it could be a University, a college or a vocational school. Remember the caliber of people teaching in a school helps to raise the profile of that school, even having a PhD and teaching in a secondary school is still a very good way of building the human capital of our beloved nation. We are important to the economic advancement and the intellectual development of this nation. This is because, the little resources we earned abroad can go a long way in creating the needed investments back home.
Sierra Leoneans Home
There is no doubt that our country is at the crossroad. As citizens, we need to go beyond what many people called Patriotism. Anyone who believes in something but he or she is not willing to die for it will forever remain a dreamer.
As we encourage diaspora Sierra Leoneans to come home, we that are living home need to exhibit virtues and honesty. If your brother send any dollar home, use it wisely and create a surprising impact not a surprising waste. Hard work pays. When we hear of Pyramids being built, great temples and walls, such was based on hard work. To build a nation like Sierra Leone, you need citizens who are willing, and prepared to lay their differences and ready to work every day and night without season. We need Citizens who are prepared to fight corruption in themselves first, instill a great spirit of honesty in their homes and teach their followers and families as well as friends to work every day.
Going to school and learning the hard way is just one side of the story. The harder the learning the better the future. To transform a nation into a scientific hub, citizens need to work harder and smarter. We are our own destiny and we must stand up for our country. Sierra Leone is all we have. The combination of Sierra Leoneans abroad who are willing to invest home and a trusted Sierra Leonean who are willing to genuinely protect and make good use of the investment will change Sierra Leone in a twinkle of an eye.
Whenever I hear the Government telling us that we are not promising a smooth start, the more I am confident in the very government, I must admit. The government should continue its hard work. A better way to start is by opening the country up through good road connectivity, water system and internet. To enhance this, there is a huge need for electricity in every part of the country. This is crucial to accelerate economic development. With good roads, electricity and internet, I can assure this government that Sierra Leone will rise. The rise will become a magic. Once citizens are given the right protection and provided with the right support, there is a growing appetite to ensure that more money enters the country. To fight poverty, one must build a wealth base and an economy that favours everyone . When the country is opened, people will become confident so that it does not matter where we invest, we can be sure of earning a living and getting the country on the world map. This also helps to reduce the population in cities as citizens can live anywhere and make a living.
For instance, Kailahun and Koindu are still struggling to get electricity, water and road. This is the region with the greatest potential for trade and agriculture. The only incentives needed in these locations are the four main things: electricity, road, internet and water.
The government needs to ensure that corruption at any point does not become a thing to overlook. And let no one feels that they can be very smart in this modern world. There should never be such a belief that you are so smart to fool everyone. The truth will always prevail. It does not matter what. This world is too advanced for anyone person to be all wise, except God. We need to stand up and remain genuine. Our sacrifice and time are needed for every success. Our commitment to education will earn us a name and fame to make Mama Salone a place to respect, be proud of and an example for modern advancement- a thing that we are well prepared for I must admit.
Opposition Leaders & Parties
As an association of committed citizens, Political parties must be for the common good of the country not members. Political party systems in Sierra Leone needs to rethink its strategic actions and what it sells to the public. Political party system in Sierra Leone must go beyond partisanship, political fame and quick fixes. It must be an institution built with the country at the centre of its decisions.
In the past months when the New Direction came to power, we have heard of wrangling and fights which when carefully measured are all geared towards bad governance and a struggle for the self. Enough is enough I must say this. The political party system of Sierra Leone must change for a good path as we enter a new call.
We have our citizens going out but coming home with disgrace. We have many of us stealing Sierra Leone’s resources and storing them outside especially in the West. Please tell me, how many of these countries where we bank our money, do bank even a dollar in our countries?
For years, people have derailed the advancement of this nation for just a few people forgetting that it does not matter how rich you are, the look of your country determines the respect you gain outside.
Because we impoverished our own nations, that is why our brothers and sisters are leaving and sometimes deported with disgrace.
We must know this that those who go out will forever remain Sierra Leoneans and when they go wrong, they are deported inhumanely. Those who are accepted are only accepted because they can be used for their services. I can understand many people preferring that life than coming home. However, let us stand tall above prejudice and racism with only one bullet: ‘’making our homes better and habitable for all’’. This is good because, even when you are deported, you are sure that you are coming home to a loving country. To achieve such, every political party has to adopt a national agenda that is free from every bad vice we hear today.
Let all political parties enshrined in them good governance. And for whatever reason, corruption must be killed and burnt forever. It is difficult to defend someone who has confessed and prepare to pay back through restitution. It is a clear indication that it was accepted by then. Today, we all must know this, Sierra Leone has a new call- a call to building a nation that is competitive with other nations. For this, we need capable, genuine and active political parties that put Sierra Leone first.
The Sierra Leone Media and Social Media are now diverged. I can say for the mainstream media, it is more polarized with partisan sentiment. Sometimes, the truth is buried as if it is done against those intended. But let us know this, a bad Sierra Leone is the reflection of all Sierra Leoneans. Reporting must be accurate, impartial and it should be sound enough to create pride and benefit to the nation. We encourage the Media to please stand up to its expectation and build us a media that can be respected world over. The media has the responsibility to shine light on bad happenings but most especially to market the country to the outsiders. There is no better place on earth than your country and for Sierra Leone, we have the most beautiful, tolerant and most peaceful nation with friendly citizens. This is an advantage to trade and to use in making our country great. All we need is to build a vibrant economy, educate our citizens and provide the space for everyone to excel. The media can do this and help by marketing the face of Sierra Leone.
